House Edge: Craps Bets

Simply put it is the difference (expressed as a percentage) between what the true odds pays and what the actual casino payoff odds pays. It can be seen in the below craps house edge table.

The lower the house edge the average loss for the player will be lower and the average win for the player will be higher.
The higher the house edge the average loss for the player will be higher and the average win for the player will be lower.

* Don't Pass and Don't Come bets are figured for either Bar 2 or Bar 12.
To treat the stand-off as a non-event the true odds would be 1.0285 to 1 and the house edge 1.40%.
To treat the Bar 2 or Bar 12 as an event the true odds would be 1.0864 to 1 and the house edge 1.3636%

There are many craps references that list the house advantages for Don't bets w/ odds as:
1x=.832, 2x=.592, 3x=.459, 5x=.317, 10x=.179, 20x=.095, 100x=.02 .
Their figures do not take into account the fact that most casinos will allow the Don't Odds bets to be larger than just a strict multiple of the flat bet.
For example, at a double odds table with a $5 flat bet and a point of 4, you could lay the maximum $20 odds rather than $10.

** Some casinos offer 3X odds on the 4&10, 4X odds on the 5&9, and 5X odds on the 6&8.

*** These are average figures. Actual true and payoff odds depend on which winning number has rolled. The house edge is still very high as compared to other craps bets.

32 pass line wagers
The expected value of 32 straight (on average an hour of play) $5 pass line bets (with a house edge of 1.41%) is a loss of $2.26.
Chart shows a different story. The most common outcome is to break even.
The 3 most common outcomes are 1. you break even, 2. you lose $10 or 3. you win $10.

There are exactly 16 outcomes that create a player win and 16 outcomes that create a player loss. The winning probability of the pass line (49.3%) creates the difference in the overall winning (39.89%) and losing (46.16%) outcome percentages.
In this example the expected loss of $2.26 does not exactly come into play in the short run of an hour of play.
