It is important to know the table limits of the craps table you are thinking of playing at. You would not want to buy in at a table to make $5 bets when the minimum on the craps
table limit sign says $25 to $5000.
It works also on the maximum side. A table with limits of $3 to $300 may not work for you if you usually make bets in the $500 to $1000 range. It happens quite often for one reason or another, the most common reason is that a spot at the table may have just opened up and the player was quick to occupy that position only to see the table limit sign as not up to their liking.
Viewing the table limits should be the first item you look for as you step up to the table.
The minimum and maximum amounts that can be wagered on a bet,
as
well as the maximum allowed odds factors, ( 2X, 3X, 10X etc.) are posted on the small
placard or sign on the inside of the craps table near each dealer.
A typical craps table might have a:

The posted craps table limits most always apply to all bets except the proposition and odds bets.
In some southern Nevada and Las Vegas casinos you can still find $2 and $3 minimum tables during the week but most are a $5 minimum table. The 25 cent table has long disappeared from southern Nevada casinos.
The min and max bets for prop bets are not normally posted at the craps table. I have seen a few California Indian casinos that have the prop bets posted but it is the exception to the rule.
For proposition bets the minimum is usually the smallest denomination cheque (pronounced check) in use at the table.
For example, the minimum bet allowed on a prop bet, say the all day hardways on a $5 posted craps table, would be $1 as most all craps tables have $1 cheques. There can still be found 50 cent cheques or coins on a few craps tables but those are not the minimum bet for any proposition bets. They will be used on a $2 or $3 table to correctly pay off a place bet on the 6 or 8 that might pay $3.50 for a $3 bet.
The minimum bet allowed on a proposition bet, say the Eleven bet on a $100 posted craps table, would be $5 as higher minimum tables usually do not have $1 cheques.
For proposition bets the maximum wager is usually based on the maximum possible payoff.
For example, the maximum payoff might be 3 times ( this is quite common) the posted maximum bet. So on a table with a posted $1000 maximum bet, the maximum payoff would be $3000.
Therefore on a bet like the Eleven, which pays 15 to 1, you could
bet a maximum of $200. You do not have to worry about figuring this out - just
ask one of the dealers at the craps table how much is the maximum that you can bet on a certain prop bet. All craps tables for the average craps player will have maximum amounts on every craps bet available.
For odds bets (pass, don't pass, come and don't come), the maximum is based on a multiple
factor of the flat bet. WHAT? For example, on a $1000 limit, double odds (2X) table, the flat bet would be limited to $1000, but the odds bet could be
as high as $2000 or as much as $4000 on the Don't Pass or Don't Come bets.
2X, 3x, 3-4-5X, 5X, 10X, 20X and 100X odds
are all different odds factors that can be found in most casinos.
Some casinos post arbitrary maximums that apply to the odds bets regardless of how much has been wagered on the flat bets. Even if the house allows 10X odds the player could only take max odds of $1000. See the placard below.

The minimum wager on the odds bet would still be the minimum amount that is posted on the table limit sign. A $5 table would allow no less than $5 odds to be placed where a $3 table will allow odds of $3 to be placed on the 4 & 10, $4 on the 5 & 9 and $5 on the 6 & 8. Yet even some low limit tables like $3 and $2 would allow wagers to be placed on the odds bet that could not be paid at exact correct odds.
An example would be $3 odds bet on the 5 or 9. The bet would pay $4.50 but since most craps tables do not have 50 cent cheques they ALWAYS round down and you would be paid $4 for the $3 odds bet. The player will then have suffered what is known as breakage.
