Roulette is one of the world's most popular casino games. In the game, players may choose to place wagers on a number, a group of numbers, the colors red or black, whether the number will be odd or even and a number of other bets that are available on a roulette table layout.
There are two different roulette wheels.
The European wheel has 37 slots
numbered 0-36. The house edge is 2.63%.
The American wheel has 38 numbers
because of the added double zero (00) number. The house edge is 5.26% percent.

The game of Roulette originated in France. The modern day layout we find
in casinos dates back to 1842. Roulette layouts have two betting
areas.
The inside betting area contains the individual numbers on the
layout.
The outside betting area has boxes for the columns, red/black
and odd/even and different groups of numbers.
The numbers on the inside are arranged in 12 rows (called "streets") of three numbers while forming three vertical columns. The 0 and 00 are at the top of the columns.

You must purchase special roulette chips when you sit down to play.
Each player receives a different color chip. This avoids any disputes between players as to whom a bet belongs to. These chips
are good for the roulette table only and you must cash them at the roulette table when you are finished playing.
You will then be given regular casino cheques to take to the
casino cashier or cage. You cannot cash in any roulette table chips at the casino cage.
Roulette chips can be any denomination - 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, at
least the value of the table minimum.
When you buy in tell the dealer what denomination you want to play with.
If you do not tell the dealer it may be presumed that you want to play
with chips that are the table minimum value. All your chips will be worth the same value.
The dealer will place a chip, the same color that you are playing with, on the edge of the wheel and a lammer with the value for a stack of 20 chips. This is how the dealer and the casino can remember what value chips you are playing with
and help when it comes time to cash in your roulette chips for casino
cheques. Most casinos will not mark a chip that is played at the minimum value.
Each roulette table has a minimum and maximum bets. You can’t combine your inside and outside bets to meet the table minimum. If the minimum bet is five dollars you have to bet $5 on the inside and $5 on the outside. You can’t bet $3 inside and $2 outside.
To play roulette, you place your bet or bets on numbers (any number including the zero) in the table layout or on the outside, and when everybody at the table had a chance to place their bets, the croupier starts the spin and launches the ball. Just a few moments before the ball is about to drop over the slots, the croupier says 'no more bets'. From that moment no one is allowed to place - or change - their bets until the ball drops on a slot. Only after the croupier places a marker on the winning number on the roulette table and clears all the losing bets you can then start placing your new bets while the croupier pays the winners. The winners are those bets that are on or around the number that comes up. Also the bets on the outside of the layout win if the winning number is represented.
The Dealer
Dealers are required to keep the wheel moving at all times, even between
spins. They spin the ball in the opposite direction of
the wheel. This causes the ball to bounce around before landing on a
number.
The dealer marks the winning number with a marker. You are not allowed to place your bet for the next spin until the dealer removes the marker from the previous winning number. Make sure you wait for them to pick it up before putting down your chips.
If the number you want to bet is covered is already covered with chips, don’t worry. It is permissible to stack you chips on top of the other chips. This is another reason why each player has their own color chips.
You are allowed to place bets after the dealer spins the ball. The dealer will tell you when to stop. As the ball slows down the dealer will wave their hand over the table and call out “No More Bets.”
The French roulette rules are very much like the European roulette rules. It has the same 37 numbered wheel with one zero but a different table layout for the outside bets.

The player odds in French roulette are the same as in European roulette (only one zero) and better than the odds in American roulette (two zeros). The players loose only 50% of their even-money bets when the outcome is zero, known as the 'La Partage' rule.
The object of the game is still the same - to predict which number out of possible 37 the ball will land on. And of course, they speak French. Below are the English and equivalent French terms for the various roulette bets:
Inside bets
* One number Straight up = En plein
* Two numbers Split Bet = Cheval
* Three numbers Street Bet = Transversale
* Four numbers Corner = Carre
* Six numbers Line Bet = Sixainne
Outside bets
* Twelve numbers Column = Colonne
* Twelve numbers Dozen = Douzaine
* Red or Black = Rouge, Noir
* Even or Odd = Pair, Impair
* Low or High numbers = Manque, Passe
